Saint Nectarius of Constantinople, also known as Nectarius of Tarsus, was born into the imperial Roman nobility in Tarsus, Cilicia (modern-day Turkey). He was the son of a senator of Constantinople, which is now known as Istanbul. Nectarius initially served as an imperial magistrate, demonstrating his intelligence and piety. Although he was married and still an unbaptized Christian catechumen layman, his devotion to his faith was evident to all who knew him. In 381, Nectarius was chosen to be the Bishop of Constantinople, despite his status as a layman. After being baptized, ordained, and consecrated, he was properly installed as the bishop of the city. As a bishop, Nectarius proved himself to be a capable and zealous leader, fiercely combating the heresy of Arianism that had plagued the Church. Nectarius dedicated himself to the spiritual well-being of his flock, actively promoting orthodoxy and defending the true doctrines of the Catholic Church. His sermons were known for their wisdom and eloquence, attracting both the faithful and those interested in hearing his teachings. Nectarius also demonstrated a deep commitment to the welfare of the poor, offering them food, shelter, and assistance as a reflection of his Christian values. Throughout his episcopacy, Nectarius worked diligently to restore unity within the Church and reconcile any divisions that had arisen. His efforts were focused on fostering harmony among the clergy and laity, seeking to create an environment of peace and love. Despite his high position and influence, Nectarius remained humble and committed to a life of simplicity. He renounced personal gain and material possessions, dedicating himself solely to the service of God and his people. His humility and holiness made him a beloved figure among the faithful. Saint Nectarius of Constantinople passed away on September 17, 397, of natural causes. His life of piety, wisdom, and dedication to the Church left an indelible impact on the faithful, and he was honored as a saint even before the formal canonization process was established. Saint Nectarius is venerated as a holy bishop and an example of Christian virtue. Although he is not widely recognized as a patron saint of any specific cause, his life and teachings continue to inspire and guide the faithful today.
