Biography

Saint Nicarete of Constantinople, also known as Nicarete of Nicomedia, was a wealthy noblewoman who lived in Constantinople during the 4th century. Born in Nicomedia, Bithynia, in Asia Minor (modern-day Izmit, Turkey), she grew up in a privileged household and enjoyed all the comforts of a noble life.

From an early age, Nicarete felt a strong calling to dedicate her life to God and to serve the less fortunate. In pursuit of her spiritual calling, she took private vows of chastity and committed herself to a life of prayer, selflessness, and charitable works. In her position of wealth and influence, she used her resources to alleviate the suffering of the poor and sick in Constantinople.

Saint Nicarete became renowned for her acts of generosity and compassion. She opened her home to those in need, providing them with food, shelter, and medical care. Her selflessness and devotion to others endeared her to the people of Constantinople, and she became a beloved figure in the city.

One of her closest friends was Saint John Chrysostom, the Archbishop of Constantinople. Together, they worked tirelessly to bring comfort and support to the marginalized and oppressed. However, their bold advocacy for social justice and their criticism of corruption within the ruling classes drew the ire of those in power.

In 404 AD, Saint John Chrysostom was unjustly exiled from Constantinople by the imperial authorities. Nicarete, being fiercely loyal, chose to accompany him into exile, leaving behind her home, possessions, and her beloved city. The soldiers who came to escort her from Constantinople had hoped to seize any remaining wealth or valuables she carried, but to their surprise, they discovered that she had already given away everything to the poor.

During her time in exile, Nicarete continued to minister and care for the less fortunate. Her unwavering commitment to her faith and her dedication to serving others remained untouched by her own personal hardships.

While the exact details of Saint Nicarete's death are not well-documented, it is believed that she died around 405 AD of natural causes. She was mourned by many in Constantinople who had witnessed firsthand her acts of love and kindness.

Recognizing her virtuous life and remarkable contributions to society, Saint Nicarete of Constantinople was venerated as a saint in the early Church. Though her specific patronage and representation are not well-defined, her legacy as a selfless benefactor and helper of the poor serve as an inspiration to all who strive to follow in her footsteps.

Saint Nicarete of Constantinople's feast day is celebrated on December 27th. Her holiness and devotion continue to inspire and guide the faithful even to this day.
