Biography

Saint Caidoc, also known as Cadoc, Cadou, Caidocus, and Caidos, was a revered figure in the Catholic Church. He is recognized as the Apostle of Picardy and was born in Ireland. Little is known about his early life, but he is believed to have received a rigorous spiritual education as a student of Saint Columba of Iona, a prominent Irish saint. In 622, Saint Caidoc embarked on a mission to the Picardy region in northern France. There, he joined forces with Saint Fricor, and together they tirelessly worked to spread the teachings of Christianity to the pagan inhabitants of the area. Their efforts were met with success as they managed to convert many individuals, including one notable convert, Saint Richarius of Celles. Saint Caidoc and Saint Fricor faced persecution from the local pagans, but they were fortunate to find protection from Saint Richarius. His influence and support shielded them from harm, allowing them to continue their missionary work without hindrance. The three saints formed a strong bond, united in their devotion to spreading the Christian faith. It is believed that Saint Caidoc played a significant role in the establishment and consolidation of the Christian community in the Picardy region. His dedication and devotion to fulfilling his mission endeared him to the local population, who respected and revered him as a holy man. Saint Caidoc died around the year 630 in Centula, which is now known as St-Riquier, France. Following his passing, his relics were enshrined in the parish of Saint-Riquier, near Amiens, where they remain today. His feast days are commemorated on 1st April and 30th May on some calendars. Although Saint Caidoc's representation is not known, his legacy and the impact of his missionary work remain evident. His canonization took place prior to the establishment of the formal Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him a pre-congregation saint. While he does not have any known patronage, he is venerated for his role as a missionary and apostle in the Picardy region. Saint Caidoc's life exemplifies the virtues of perseverance, faith, and selflessness. As an ardent follower of Saint Columba of Iona, he dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel and converting non-believers. His partnership with Saint Fricor and the support of Saint Richarius demonstrate the power of collaborating with like-minded individuals to accomplish shared goals, even in the face of adversity. The Catholic Church continues to honor Saint Caidoc's memory and his contributions to the spread of Christianity in Picardy and beyond.
