Blessed Aleksy Sobaszek, also known as Aleksander Sobaszek, was born on 17 August 1895 in Przygodzice, Wielkopolskie, Poland. After completing his high school education in Ostrów, Poland, he embarked on a journey of academic pursuit and spiritual commitment. He studied in Freising, Germany, as well as in Pozna≈Ñ and Gniezno, Poland, accessing a broad range of theological and philosophical knowledge.
In 1919, Aleksy was ordained a priest and dedicated himself to serving the Catholic Church and its faithful. He began his pastoral ministry as a parish priest and occasionally taught in various Polish cities, including Wągrowiec, Słupy, Trzemeszno, Siedlemin, and Gniezno. His exemplary leadership and dedication to education led him to become the Prefect of a teacher's college, where he served for a commendable span of nine years.
However, the unfolding events of World War II brought immense suffering and persecution, particularly for Polish nationals and the clergy. On 6 October 1941, due to his Polish heritage and his role as a priest, Blessed Aleksy Sobaszek was arrested by the Nazis. He was subsequently imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp, located in Oberbayern, Germany.
Even amidst the horrors of the concentration camp, Aleksy demonstrated unwavering faith and courage. He tirelessly ministered to his fellow prisoners, providing spiritual solace and offering them hope in their darkest moments. His dedicated service to others earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow inmates.
Sadly, Blessed Aleksy Sobaszek's life was cut short within the confines of Dachau. On 1 August 1942, he succumbed to the harsh conditions and died as a result of the inhumane treatment inflicted on him. His death marked the culmination of his selfless sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his faith and the Polish people.
In recognition of his profound spiritual journey and martyrdom, Blessed Aleksy Sobaszek was beatified on 13 June 1999 by Pope John Paul II during a moving ceremony held in Warsaw, Poland. He is revered as one of the 108 Polish Martyrs of World War II, who paid the ultimate price for their fidelity to God and their nation.
The feast day of Blessed Aleksy Sobaszek is commemorated on 1 August, the day of his death. Additionally, he is also celebrated on 12 June collectively with the other 108 Polish Martyrs of World War II. His life and legacy continue to inspire countless individuals, reminding them of the power of faith and selfless love, even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
