Saint Barbara Yi, also known as Bareubara Yi, was a brave and devout 14-year-old girl who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Korea during the 19th century. She is considered a martyr for her unwavering faith, even in the face of persecution and death. Born in 1825 in Jeongpa, Seoul, South Korea, Saint Barbara Yi grew up in a time when the Catholic Church faced intense persecution in Korea. Despite the dangers, she openly embraced her faith and became an exemplary model of devotion. Saint Barbara Yi's commitment to Catholicism eventually led her to face imprisonment and an untimely death. The exact circumstances that led to her arrest are not explicitly documented, but it is believed that she was arrested along with her family for their Christian beliefs. While in prison, Saint Barbara Yi faced many hardships, yet she maintained her faith and remained steadfast in her devotion to God. Sadly, during her imprisonment, she contracted the plague and ultimately succumbed to the disease on May 27, 1839. Her extraordinary faith and unwavering dedication to her beliefs did not go unnoticed. In recognition of her martyrdom, Pope Pius XI venerated Saint Barbara Yi on May 9, 1925, by decreeing her martyrdom. Just two months later, on July 5, 1925, the same Pope beatified her, acknowledging her as a blessed servant of God. Her journey towards sainthood was completed on May 6, 1984, when Saint Barbara Yi was canonized by Pope John Paul II. This canonization affirmed her holiness and recognized her as a saint within the Catholic Church. As of now, Saint Barbara Yi does not have any designated patronage, but her story and sacrifice continue to inspire countless faithful around the world. Her feast days are celebrated on May 27 and September 20 as one of the Martyrs of Korea, honoring her martyrdom and the ultimate sacrifice she made for her faith. Saint Barbara Yi's life serves as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the strength of one individual's conviction. Her story reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless martyrs throughout history and encourages us to remain steadfast in our beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
