Blessed Margaret Of Lorraine

Feast Day: November 2

Death: November 2, 1521
Blessed Margaret of Lorraine, also known as Margaret Lotarynska, Margarita of Lorraine, Margherita of Lorraine, Marguerite de Lorraine-Vaudemont, or Marguerite of Lorraine, was born in 1463 at Vaudemont Castle in Lorraine, France. She was the youngest daughter of Duke Frederick of Lorraine and Jolanta Anjou and a niece of Margaret of Anjou, the queen consort of England.
In 1488, Margaret married René, Duke of Alen√ßon, who was significantly older than her, being 23 years her senior. Over the years, she became a devoted wife and mother, raising three children. However, her husband passed away in 1492, leaving Margaret a widow.
Despite her title and privileges, Margaret chose to lead a simple and austere life. She took it upon herself to administer the ducal estate, displaying excellent management skills and a strong sense of responsibility. Margaret was known for her prudence and generosity, devoting herself to taking care of her family and giving generously to charitable causes.
One of her most notable acts of philanthropy was the founding of a Poor Clare convent at Argentan, Brittany, France. This convent provided a place of refuge and spiritual sustenance for women seeking a life of religious devotion. Deeply committed to her faith, Margaret desired to offer others the opportunity to live a life of contemplation and prayer.
As time went on and her children grew up, Margaret felt a strong call to dedicate her life entirely to God. In 1520, she made the decision to enter the Poor Clare convent that she had established, becoming a nun. Despite numerous attempts to make her the abbess of the community, Margaret always humbly refused such positions of authority.
Blessed Margaret of Lorraine was known for her unwavering piety and devotion to God. She lived a life of quiet sanctity, seeking to emulate the teachings of Jesus Christ in her everyday actions. Her selflessness, simplicity, and commitment to prayer were an inspiration to those who knew her.
On 2 November 1521, Blessed Margaret of Lorraine passed away at the Argentan convent, Brittany, France, having lived a life marked by faith, charity, and humble service. Her death was attributed to natural causes. Her feast day is celebrated on 2 November.
Blessed Margaret of Lorraine's holiness and reputation for sanctity endured long after her passing. On 10 March 1921, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XV, who confirmed her cultus. Her beatification acknowledged her exemplary Christian life, serving as a testament to her faith-filled journey and the legacy of her virtues.
