Blessed Helen Of Poland

Blessed Helen of Poland, also known as Helen of Hungary, Helena, Iolanda, Iolantha, Joheleth, Jolanda, Jolanta, Jolenta, and Yolanda, was born around 1235 in Hungary. She was the daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary and Maria Laskaris, and the niece of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. Additionally, she was the grand-niece of Saint Hedwig of Andechs and the younger sister of Blessed Cunegund of Poland, who became her guardian and raised her.

In her youth, Blessed Helen was raised in a deeply devout and influential family. Her upbringing in the Catholic faith greatly influenced her spiritual journey. As she grew older, Helen's piety and dedication to God deepened. She eventually became a Franciscan tertiary, embracing a life of devotion and service to the Church.

Helen married Duke Boleslas V, a devout prince of Kalishi in Pomerania, and together they had three children. Despite her royal status, she remained humble and committed to her faith, striving to live a truly Christian life. Tragically, her husband passed away in 1279, leaving Helen widowed and responsible for raising their children alone.

Driven by her love for God and her desire to serve others, Blessed Helen founded a Poor Clare convent in Gnesen, Poland. The convent became a haven for women seeking to live a life of poverty, simplicity, and prayer. Helen dedicated herself to nurturing the spiritual growth of her sisters and took on the role of their superior.

Following the foundation of the convent, Helen, one of her daughters, and her sister Cunegund retired to the Poor Clare convent that Cunegund had established in Sandeck. These women continued to dedicate themselves to a life of prayer and service, fostering a strong community within the convent.

Towards the end of her life, Helen was appointed as the superior of the convent she had founded in Gnesen. This recognition of her leadership and spiritual guidance demonstrated the profound impact she had on her community and the Church.

Blessed Helen of Poland passed away on June 11, 1298, in Gnesen, Poland, at the age of around 63. Her death was attributed to natural causes. Her holiness and devotion to God were widely recognized, and her beatification took place on September 26, 1827, by Pope Leo XII. The Catholic Church confirmed her cultus, celebrating her feast day on June 11, with some calendars noting June 12 and 15, and others also including March 3 and 6.

She dedicated herself to the establishment and leadership of religious communities, leaving a lasting impact on those she guided and influencing the spiritual lives of many.
