Biography

Saint Reverianus of Autun, also known as Reverentianus, Reveriano, Reverie, or Rivianus, was a renowned evangelizing bishop and missionary to Gaul. He embarked on his missionary journey alongside Saint Paulus of Autun and ten other companions, whose names have unfortunately been lost to history. Saint Reverianus served as the Bishop of Autun, France, where he established his base of operations. During the time of Saint Reverianus' mission, Emperor Aurelian was at war with the local populace. Unfortunately, this conflict ultimately led to the martyrdom of Saint Reverianus and his companions. As ordered by Emperor Aurelian, they were all put to death for their unwavering commitment to their faith. Saint Reverianus was born in the 3rd century in Italy. He dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Christ and converting souls to Christianity. His endeavors were not confined to a specific region, as he took the message of the Gospel to the people of Gaul, particularly in Autun, which eventually became his episcopal see. The martyrdom of Saint Reverianus and his companions occurred around the year 273 in Autun, France. They were beheaded for their refusal to renounce their faith. Following their execution, the group was buried in Autun. Over time, a monastery and church were built around their gravesite, testament to their sanctity and the reverence with which they were held. The relics and grave of Saint Reverianus were said to possess miraculous qualities. It was reported that oil flowed from his relics and grave, signifying his intercession and the grace bestowed upon those who sought his aid. In the town of Nuits, France, the head of Saint Reverianus is preserved in the local church, serving as a powerful reminder of his commitment to Christ and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith. Saint Reverianus was canonized as a saint, though his canonization took place before the formal process of canonization was established within the Catholic Church.
