Biography

Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, also known as Margarita Mary Alacoque, Margherita Mary Alacoque, or Marguerite Mary Alacoque, was born on July 22, 1647 in L'Hautecourt, Burgundy, France. At a young age, she experienced a crippling disorder but was miraculously healed through a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This profound experience prompted Margaret Mary to dedicate her life to serving God. Later on, Margaret Mary joined the Order of the Visitation at Paray-le-Monial in 1671. It was during her time in the convent that she received a series of revelations from Jesus Christ himself. In the year 1675, Saint Margaret Mary had a vision where she encountered Christ, fresh from the Scourging, and He revealed to her His Sacred Heart, which was surrounded by thorns representing His sacrifices. In this vision, Christ made twelve promises to her and to those who would practice true devotion to His Sacred Heart. Despite facing opposition, particularly in Jansenist areas, Saint Margaret Mary fervently spread the message of devotion to the Sacred Heart. This devotion, although initially met with resistance, eventually gained widespread popularity and became a staple of Catholic piety. Saint Margaret Mary's dedication to spreading the message of the Sacred Heart brought comfort and inspiration to many. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque is often depicted in artwork wearing the habit of the Order of the Visitation and holding a flaming heart, symbolizing her devotion to the Sacred Heart. Another common representation shows her kneeling before Jesus, who exposes His heart to her. These depictions capture the essence of her spiritual experiences and her profound connection to Christ. On October 17, 1690, Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque passed away from natural causes. Her body was found to be incorrupt, a phenomena often associated with sainthood. On September 18, 1864, Pope Blessed Pius IX beatified her, recognizing her holiness and the miracles attributed to her intercession. Later, on May 13, 1920, Pope Benedict XV canonized her as a saint, acknowledging her exceptional devotion and the impact she made in promoting the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque is honored as the patron saint against polio and the death of parents, as well as the patron saint of devotees of the Sacred Heart and polio patients. Her life and spirituality continue to inspire millions of Catholics worldwide, drawing them closer to the merciful love of Jesus Christ.
