Biography

Saint Marcellus of Die, also known as Marcel or Marcelo, was a bishop of Die in the province of Lugdunense, Gaul (modern-day France) during the 5th century. He is recognized as a courageous defender of orthodox Christianity against the Arian heresy. Not much is known about Saint Marcellus' early life or his family background. However, historical records indicate that he was appointed as the bishop of Die in 463. During his tenure as bishop, Marcellus faced significant challenges due to the rise of Arianism, a heretical belief that denied the divinity of Christ. King Eurico, who was an Arian, persecuted Catholic bishops and clergy who refused to adopt Arianism. Marcellus, steadfast in his faith, fearlessly defended orthodox Christianity and rejected the heresy. As a result of his resistance to Arianism, Marcellus was exiled from his diocese by King Eurico. He sought refuge in Rome, Italy, where he lived for several years. Despite the difficulties he faced during this exile, Marcellus continued to actively promote the teachings of the Catholic Church and provide spiritual guidance to the faithful. Marcellus' exile came to an end when King Eurico died, allowing him to return to his diocese in Die. However, the exact circumstances surrounding his return remain unknown. Saint Marcellus' life is marked by his zeal for orthodoxy, unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith, and dedication to pastoral care. He exemplified the virtues of courage, resilience, and faithfulness, which greatly inspired the people under his pastoral care. Saint Marcellus of Die passed away on January 17, 510, at the monastery of Saint-Maurice, La Roquette, Montmeyan, France. It is reported that he died a peaceful death of natural causes. His relics were later transferred to Barjols, France, in 1350, where they remain venerated. While Saint Marcellus of Die does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, his courageous defense of orthodox Christianity against Arianism serves as a source of inspiration to all Catholics striving to remain faithful to the true teachings of the Church. His feast day is celebrated on January 17th, commemorating his death and honoring his dedication to the faith. As a Pre-Congregation saint, Saint Marcellus of Die was venerated long before the official process of canonization was established within the Catholic Church.
