Biography

Saint Liadán of Killyon, also known as Liadain, Líadáin, Liadhain, Lídain, and Wingela, was a prominent figure in the early Catholic Church in Ireland. Born in the latter 5th century in Ireland, she was the daughter of a pagan chieftain. Legend has it that Saint Liadán conceived her son, Saint Kieran, in a remarkable manner. According to the Oengu Martyrology, a star fell into her mouth, leading to her miraculous pregnancy. Although this story is steeped in symbolism, it reflects the extraordinary nature of Saint Kieran's birth. Despite her pagan upbringing, Saint Liadán was converted to Christianity by her son, who fervently spread the faith alongside Saint Patrick. Inspired by their missionary efforts, she embraced her newfound beliefs wholeheartedly and dedicated her life to serving God. Saint Liadán's commitment to the faith led her to decide to become a nun, and she entered a convent. Her deep spiritual devotion and ability to communicate the teachings of Christ made her a trusted and revered figure in the growing Christian community of Ireland. As her spiritual journey continued, Saint Liadán's dedication to the faith earned her the position of abbess.
