Saint Giovanni Battista Piamarta, also known as Johnannes Baptist Piamarta or John the Baptist Piamarta, was born into a poor family on 26 November 1841 in Brescia, Italy. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was just nine years old, and as a result, Giovanni grew up in the slums, receiving a rudimentary education. Fortunately, his religious maternal grandfather became his mentor during this difficult time. As a young man, Giovanni felt a calling to the priesthood, and he pursued this vocation with great determination. He was ordained on 24 December 1865 and received his first assignment at the parish of Saint Alexander in Carzago Riviera, Bedizzole, Italy. It was during his time at this parish that he would embark on a life-long mission to work with poor youth and young factory workers in the Brescia region. On 3 December 1866, Father Piamarta, together with Father Pietro Capretti, founded the Workman's Institute. This institution was established to provide support and guidance to young people who were migrating to the city in search of employment opportunities. Father Giovanni recognized the importance of keeping Christianity alive in the lives of these individuals and worked tirelessly to ensure they had access to spiritual guidance and education. Not content with the work being done in the city, Father Piamarta also collaborated with Father Giovanni Bonsignori to establish the Agricultural Colony of Remedello. This initiative sought to provide similar services to farm workers who were often neglected and faced various hardships. Father Giovanni's dedication and vision for the well-being of young people proved to be an inspiration, and religious brothers and sisters were drawn to the important work he was undertaking. As a result, in March 1900, he founded the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth and the Congregation of the Sisters, Humble Servants of the Lord. These religious congregations served as a formalized structure for those who wished to further Father Giovanni's mission of assisting and guiding young people. Throughout his life, Father Piamarta's commitment to the welfare of the marginalized never wavered. His foundations and congregations, which began in his lifetime, continue to this day, carrying on his legacy and helping youth in need. Saint Giovanni Battista Piamarta passed away on 25 April 1913 in Remedello, Brescia, Italy, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest in the Workman's Institute church in Remedello, where his inspiring work began. Recognizing the exceptional virtue and dedication demonstrated by Father Giovanni, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 22 March 1986, acknowledging his heroic qualities. Then, on 12 October 1997, Pope John Paul II beatified him, recognizing his holiness and the miracles attributed to his intercession. Finally, on 21 October 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Saint Giovanni Battista Piamarta, affirming his status as a saint in the Catholic Church. Although there is currently no known patronage associated with Saint Giovanni Battista Piamarta, his life and work remain an enduring testament to the power of compassion, education, and faith in transforming the lives of disadvantaged youth.
