Feast Day: August 1
Saint Friard, also known as Friardo, was born in the year 511 in the village of Bresne, France. Little is known about his early life and upbringing, but it is believed that he grew up in a devout Catholic family. From a young age, Friard displayed a deep sense of piety and a strong desire to devote his life to God. Seeking solitude and a life of contemplation, he chose to become a hermit on the remote island of Vindomitte, located off the coast of France. Living as a hermit, Friard spent his days in prayer, fasting, and meditation, dedicating himself to a life of deep spiritual reflection. Despite his isolation, he formed a close friendship with another hermit, Saint Secundel, who also resided on the island. Friard's piety and holiness attracted the attention of those in nearby villages. Unfortunately, not all who encountered him were appreciative of his devotion and sought to torment and ridicule him. However, Friard's faith would ultimately demonstrate its power. On one occasion, a group of individuals determined to mock Friard and disrupt his peaceful existence began to torment him physically. As they approached him with cruel intentions, a remarkable event occurred. A cloud of wasps descended upon the tormenters, attacking them in defense of Friard. Astonished and frightened, they quickly retreated, seeking refuge from the swarm of wasps. Rather than reveling in this demonstration of divine intervention, Friard felt compassion for his attackers. He believed in forgiveness and prayer as powerful tools for transformation. With humility and genuine concern, he interceded on their behalf, praying fervently for their well-being and safety. In response to Friard's selfless pleas, the cloud of wasps, previously agitated and hostile, peacefully dispersed, leaving both the tormenters and Friard unharmed. This extraordinary event astonished all those who witnessed it, spreading Friard's reputation as a holy and blessed individual far and wide. Despite facing many trials and temptations throughout his life, Friard remained steadfast in his commitment to serving God. His undying faith and devotion brought solace to many who sought spiritual guidance. Saint Friard passed away in the year 577, having lived an exemplary life dedicated to God and the service of others. His canonization took place in Pre-Congregation times, recognizing his sanctity and the numerous miracles attributed to his intercession. Friard is now venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, celebrated on his feast day, August 1st. He is especially invoked by those seeking protection against the fear of wasps and those suffering from spheksophobia, the fear of wasps. Spheksophobics, individuals afflicted by this fear, find comfort and solace in praying to Saint Friard, who can intercede on their behalf. His life serves as a reminder of the transformative power of faith, forgiveness, and compassion.
