Feast Day: April 25
Saint Franca Visalta, also known as Franca of Piacenza or Francesca da Vitalta, was born in 1170 in Piacenza, Italy. At the tender age of seven, Franca was placed in the care of the Benedictine convent of Saint Syrus in her hometown. It was here that she began her spiritual journey, which would eventually lead her to become a revered saint. Having displayed a profound devotion to God from an early age, Franca decided to join the Benedictine Order when she turned 14. Her commitment to her faith and her unwavering discipline soon earned her the position of abbess, despite her young age. However, Franca's extreme ascetic practices and the severe austerities she imposed on herself and her sisters resulted in her being removed from her position as abbess. As a result, she became somewhat isolated from most of the other nuns in the convent. Despite this setback, Franca found solace in the companionship of one of the sisters named Carentia, who shared her passion for strict discipline. When Carentia entered the Cistercian novitiate at Rapallo, Northern Italy, Franca managed to persuade her parents to establish a Cistercian community at Montelana, Italy. Both Franca and Carentia joined this new community, with Franca eventually becoming the abbess. Under Franca's guidance, the Cistercian community thrived and later moved to Pittoli, Italy. Throughout her life, Franca adhered rigorously to the strict austerities she had imposed on herself. Her unwavering commitment to prayer and asceticism was admired by all who knew her. Even in the face of failing health, she spent most nights in the chapel, dedicating hours to fervent prayer. Saint Franca Visalta passed away peacefully in 1218, dying of natural causes. Her relics were later transferred to Piacenza, Italy, where she had spent most of her life. In recognition of her holy life and the cult that had developed around her, Franca was canonized by Pope Gregory X in the 13th century. Pope Paul V confirmed her cultus in the early 17th century. Although Saint Franca Visalta is not associated with any specific patronage, her life serves as an inspiration for those seeking to grow closer to God through their spiritual practices and dedication to prayer. Her feast day is celebrated on April 25th, a time when Catholics reflect on her remarkable life and strive to emulate her unwavering devotion to the divine.
