Born around 590 in Vienne, Dauphine, France, Clarus dedicated his life to the service of God from an early age. He joined the Benedictine community at the abbey of Saint Ferreol, where he embraced the monastic way of life with great devotion and discipline. His commitment and exemplary life as a monk impressed his superiors, and he was chosen to become the abbot of the Abbey of Saint Marcellus in Vienne, Dauphine. As an abbot, Clarus was not only responsible for the spiritual well-being of his monks but was also sought after as a spiritual director for many others.
