Feast Day: November 20

Death: October 1, 16
Saint Bernerio of Eboli, also known as Berniero, was born around the year 1100 in Spain. Not much is known about his early life or family background. However, his life became a remarkable testimony of faith and devotion. Bernerio embarked on a pilgrimage to all the major shrines in Spain, seeking spiritual enlightenment and a deeper connection with God. After completing this journey, he felt called to continue his pilgrimage to Rome, Italy, where he hoped to experience the divine presence even more profoundly. His pilgrimage to Rome was marked by prayer, penance, and acts of charity along the way. Upon reaching Rome, Bernerio found solace and inspiration in the holy sites and the company of fellow pilgrims. However, he soon felt a strong desire to withdraw from the world and dedicate himself wholly to a life of prayer and solitude. He ventured to the town of Eboli, located in Salerno, Italy, and became a cave hermit. In this secluded location, Bernerio devoted himself to a life of intense prayer, meditating on the scriptures and seeking to grow in holiness. One aspect that made Bernerio's spirituality unique was his personal fight against sin, symbolized in his representation as a pilgrim standing or chastising a dragon. He recognized the spiritual battle within himself and understood that by overcoming his own weaknesses and temptations, he could become a more faithful servant of God. Throughout his hermitage in Eboli, Bernerio held steadfast to his commitment to live a life of virtue and purity. His spiritual presence and devotion soon attracted others who sought his counsel and guidance. Bernerio became known for his deep wisdom and spiritual insights, providing spiritual direction to those who sought his assistance. Saint Bernerio of Eboli passed away in the late 12th century, having lived a life dedicated to prayer and mortification. He was buried at the church of the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro in Eboli, Italy. However, his relics remained hidden until their rediscovery on 16 October 1554. This important event led to the enshrinement of his relics under the altar of the crypt of the church of San Pietro in Eboli on 25 July 1930. Although Saint Bernerio of Eboli was never officially canonized in the pre-congregation era, the Congregation of Rites recognized his sanctity. They approved an Office for the clergy of Eboli, Italy, on 18 May 1602, expressing their acknowledgment of his status as a saint. Saint Bernerio is venerated as the patron saint of Eboli, Italy. His life continues to inspire and encourage people to embark on pilgrimages, both physical and spiritual, to grow in their faith and overcome the personal battles they face. Saint Bernerio's unwavering commitment to God and his personal fight against sin serve as a reminder that it is possible for all believers to aspire to holiness and find solace in God's grace.
