Saint Augustine Tchao

Feast Day: March 21

Death: January 27, 1815
Saint Augustine Tchao, also known as Augustin Rong Zhao, Augustinus Zhao, or Augustine Zhao Rong, was born around 1746 in Wuchuan, Guizhou, China. Little is known about his early life or family background, but it is believed that he had a military career as a soldier before encountering Christianity. At the time, China was relatively closed off to foreign influence, including Christian missionaries. However, in the late 18th century, Saint Gabriel John Tauin du Fresse, a French missionary, was sent to China to spread the Gospel. Saint Augustine Tchao played a crucial role in his mission by escorting and protecting Saint Gabriel as he traveled to Beijing. During their journey, Tchao became deeply intrigued by the teachings of Saint Gabriel and converted to Christianity himself. This conversion marked a turning point in his life, as he decided to leave his military career and dedicate himself to the service of God. After his conversion, Tchao pursued his religious vocation and was ordained as a priest. He was subsequently assigned to work in the Sichuan apostolic vicariate, where he tirelessly preached the Gospel and ministered to the local Christian community. Unfortunately, the growing Christian presence in China began to face persecution from the government. In 1813, during the Jiaqing Emperor's reign, Tchao was arrested for his faith and his missionary work. He was imprisoned in Chengdu, Sichuan, where he endured harsh conditions and suffering. Despite the hardships, Saint Augustine Tchao remained steadfast in his faith and continued to minister to his fellow inmates, bringing them comfort and hope in the midst of their trials. On January 27, 1815, Tchao succumbed to the poor prison conditions and passed away as a martyr for his faith. Recognizing his exemplary witness and sacrifice, Saint Augustine Tchao was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on May 27, 1900. His canonization took place on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II, as one of the Martyrs of China. Saint Augustine Tchao's life serves as a powerful reminder of the unwavering dedication to Christ, even in the face of severe persecution. His story inspires and challenges Christians to stand firm in their faith and to bring hope to others in the most difficult circumstances.
