Biography

Saint Augustinô Phan Viet Huy, also known as Augustine Huy Viet Phan and Augustine of Huy, was born around 1795 in Ha Linh, Nam Ðinh, Vietnam. He lived his life as a layman in the apostolic vicariate of East Tonkin and was a devout Catholic. Augustinô Phan Viet Huy played a significant role in supporting foreign missionaries who were working in Vietnam during a time of intense persecution against Christians. He dedicated himself to assisting these missionaries and providing them with the necessary aid and support they required. As a soldier, Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan faced numerous challenges and obstacles. He encountered great danger while working alongside Saint Nicolas The, another devout Catholic Saint who was also a martyr in Vietnam. Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan endured torture and hardship alongside his fellow believers. Ultimately, on 12 June 1839, in Thua Thiên, Vietnam, Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan was martyred for his unwavering faith. He was tragically sawn in half for his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs and abandon his Christian community. This brutal act of violence was a testament to his steadfast commitment to his faith and his love for God. The martyrdom of Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan did not go unnoticed. His courage and sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 2 July 1899, Pope Leo XIII declared him venerable by issuing a decree of martyrdom. The Church continued to honor his memory, and on 27 May 1900, he was beatified by Pope Leo XIII. Decades later, the heroic virtues and sanctity of Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan were further acknowledged, and on 19 June 1988, Pope John Paul II canonized him as a saint of the Catholic Church. Although Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan does not have a specific patronage designation, his example of unwavering faith, courage, and commitment to the Christian community serves as an inspiration for all those who face persecution or struggle in their own spiritual journeys. Today, Saint Augustinô Huy Viet Phan is revered and remembered on his feast days of 13 June and 24 November, alongside other Vietnamese Martyrs. His life and martyrdom are a testament to the enduring power of faith and the sacrifice made by countless individuals in defense of their beliefs.
