Biography

Saint Alto of Altomünster, also known as Alto of Ireland or Altone, was a revered Catholic hermit and founder of the Altomünster Monastery in Germany. Born in Ireland, little is known about his early life and upbringing. However, it is believed that Alto felt a strong calling to dedicate his life to God and seek solitude in a life of prayer and contemplation. In pursuit of his spiritual journey, Alto ventured away from his homeland and settled in a dense forest near Augsburg, Bavaria in Germany. It was here that he embraced the life of a hermit, living in isolation and devoting himself entirely to spiritual practices. His intense devotion to God and his virtuous way of life soon earned him a reputation for holiness, attracting numerous individuals who sought his guidance and instruction on their own spiritual journeys. Recognizing the need to provide shelter and instruction for these would-be spiritual students, Saint Alto founded a monastery which would later become known as Altomünster, meaning "Alto's Monastery," a testament to his profound influence on the community that emerged around it. The town of Altomünster gradually grew around the monastery, becoming a vibrant center for religious and cultural activities. Saint Alto's dedication and commitment to a life of faith inspired many, and his teachings emphasized the importance of spiritual nourishment and the pursuit of holiness. He encouraged his followers to embrace solitude, contemplation, and acts of charity, believing that a virtuous life could bring one closer to God and foster a deep sense of spiritual fulfillment. Saint Alto passed away around 760 in Bavaria, Germany, at an advanced age and from natural causes. His passing was mourned by the local community and those who had benefited from his spiritual guidance. Although specific details about Saint Alto's canonization are unknown, it is evident that he was venerated early on, as his feast day is celebrated in Germany on February 9th and in the British Isles on September 5th. Today, Saint Alto of Altomünster is revered as a model of deep spirituality, simplicity, and devotion to God. His life as a hermit and the foundation of Altomünster Monastery continue to serve as an enduring testament to the power of faith and the transformative impact of a life lived in accordance with God's teachings. Through his example, Saint Alto encourages believers to seek solace in prayer, strive for inner peace, and emulate his dedication to a life of holiness.
