Biography

Blessed Ralph Ashley, also known as Ralph Sherington, dedicated his life to serving God as a devoted Jesuit lay brother. Born with limited information about his early life, Ralph began his journey into religious service by working as a cook at Douay College.

On 28 April 1590, Ralph made a significant decision that would shape his path when he entered the English College at Valladolid. There, he continued his studies and embraced the Jesuit order, becoming a lay brother. Unfortunately, his time in the college was plagued by ill health, forcing him to leave and return to England.

During his journey back home, Blessed Ralph Ashley encountered a group of Dutch heretics who captured him. However, despite the danger he faced, Ralph fearlessly stood up to them and fearlessly explained their errors. Eventually, he arrived in England on 9 March 1598, ready to continue his mission.

Once back in his homeland, Ralph became a faithful servant and assistant to Blessed Edward Oldcorne, further dedicating himself to the spreading of Catholicism in a time when practicing the faith in England was highly dangerous and illegal. This commitment to his beliefs ultimately led to his capture on 23 January 1606.

Arrested at Hindlip House, near Worcester, England, Ralph faced accusations related to the infamous Gunpowder Plot and for assisting a priest. Alongside Father Garnet and Saint Nicholas Owen, Ralph was transferred to the Tower of London on 3 February 1606. In an effort to uncover information about other Catholics and hidden priests, Ralph was subjected to brutal torture. Yet, his unwavering resolve and loyalty to his fellow Catholics prevented him from divulging any information.

Unable to extract information from him, Ralph was transferred to Worcester, where he was unjustly condemned for his faith. On 7 April 1607, Ralph Ashley was brutally hanged, drawn, and quartered in Worcester, Worcestershire, England, becoming a martyr for his unwavering commitment to Catholicism.

Recognizing his courage and sacrifice, Pope Pius XI venerated Blessed Ralph Ashley on 8 December 1929. Only a week later, on 15 December 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and placing him among the blessed. Although not much is known about his physical appearance or any specific representations, Blessed Ralph Ashley's feast days are celebrated on 7 April and on 1 December in some calendars.

Blessed Ralph Ashley's life serves as an inspiring example of unwavering faith and dedication to the Church during turbulent times. His courage in the face of persecution and steadfast refusal to betray his fellow Catholics solidifies his place among the martyrs and saints of the Catholic Church.
