Biography

Blessed Oddino Barrotti, also known as Oddino of Fossano or Oddin, was born in 1324 in Fossano, Piedmont, Italy. He dedicated his life to serving God and the community as a priest at Saint John the Baptist Church in Fossano.

Oddino was deeply inspired by the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi, and he became a Franciscan tertiary, committing himself to living a life of simplicity, poverty, and service. His devotion to the Franciscan ideals was reflected in his selfless actions and his strong commitment to the well-being of others.

In an act of remarkable compassion and generosity, Oddino eventually resigned from his parish and converted his own house into a hospital. He understood the importance of providing care and support to those in need, and his selflessness earned him the admiration and respect of the people in his community.

In 1396, Oddino agreed to serve as the director of the collegiate chapter in Fossano, a position of leadership within his religious community. Throughout his life, he exemplified the qualities of a true shepherd, guiding and supporting others in their spiritual journey.

Tragically, while serving during a devastating plague epidemic, Blessed Oddino Barrotti contracted the illness himself and ultimately succumbed to it. His death in 1400 was a testament to his unwavering dedication to the sick and his willingness to sacrifice his own well-being for the sake of others, even in the face of great danger.

Blessed Oddino Barrotti's profound compassion and his tireless efforts to alleviate the suffering of those around him have made him an inspiring figure in the Catholic Church. His beatification took place in 1808 when Pope Pius VII confirmed his cult, affirming the deep reverence and veneration that the faithful hold for him.

Today, Blessed Oddino Barrotti is remembered and celebrated on his feast days, which vary on different calendars. July 7th is commonly recognized as his feast day, while some calendars observe it on July 21st.

His life serves as a reminder of the powerful impact that one individual can have when motivated by faith, love, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others.
