Biography

Blessed Matthew Carreri, also known as Matthew of Mantua and Matteo Carreri, was born around the year 1420 in Mantua, Italy. He joined the Dominican Order in his hometown in the year 1440, dedicating his life to the service of God and the preaching of the Gospel.

Matthew quickly earned a reputation as a talented and dedicated preacher, and he embarked on numerous journeys throughout Italy, sharing his spiritual insights and spreading the message of Christ. He possessed a deep prayer life and was known for his fervent devotion to the Rule of his Order, following it closely in all aspects of his life.

One incident for which Blessed Matthew Carreri is particularly remembered took place when he encountered a mother and daughter who had been captured and enslaved by pirates. Touched by their plight, he offered himself in exchange for their freedom. However, the pirates refused his selfless offer and declined to release the captives. This act of self-sacrifice demonstrated Matthew's profound compassion and commitment to helping others.

Throughout his life, Matthew Carreri exemplified the virtues of humility, piety, and selflessness. His dedication to spreading the faith and serving the needy endeared him to many, and he became renowned for his holiness and spiritual guidance. His preaching was influential, and his words inspired countless individuals to deepen their relationship with God.

Blessed Matthew Carreri passed away on 5 October 1470, in Vigevano, Italy, from natural causes. His reputation for sanctity continued to grow even after his death, as numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession. In recognition of his exemplary life and the profound impact he had on the faithful, Pope Sixtus VI declared him blessed in the year 1483, confirming the cultus, or devotion, surrounding him.

Later, on 2 December 1625, Pope Urban VIII officially beatified Blessed Matthew Carreri. This beatification further solidified his position as a revered figure in the Catholic Church. Today, he is commemorated on 5 October, although on some calendars his feast day is celebrated on 7 October.
