Biography

Blessed Luis Obdulio Arroyo Navarro was born on June 21, 1950, in Quiriguá, Los Amates, Izabal, Guatemala. He was raised in a devout Catholic family that instilled in him a strong faith and dedication to religious life from an early age.

Luis became a Layman member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, embracing the Franciscan ideals of poverty, humility, and service to others. He exemplified these virtues through his work as a driver for the Los Amates city government, where he consistently demonstrated a spirit of generosity and compassion towards those he encountered.

One fateful day, while transporting Blessed Tullio Maruzzo home from a Cursillo meeting in Los Amates, both Luis and Tullio were tragically murdered by anti-Catholic guerrillas. Their deaths were a testament to their unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel, as they faced persecution for their beliefs.

Luis Arroyo Navarro is recognized as a martyr, having given his life for the sake of his Catholic faith. His sacrifice and courage in the face of persecution serve as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their Christian beliefs, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Luis was beatified on October 27, 2018, by Pope Francis, in a solemn ceremony held in Morales, Izabal, Guatemala. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, who affirmed the sanctity and martyrdom of Luis Arroyo Navarro.
