Biography

Blessed Giovanna Maria Bonomo, also known as Jane Mary Bonomo and Jeanne-Marie Bonomo, was born on 15 August 1606 at her family's country estate outside Asiago, in the diocese of Vicenza, Italy. She was the eldest of four children born to Giovanni Bonomo, a wealthy merchant, and Virginia Ceschi di Santa Croce.

According to legend, Giovanna displayed remarkable abilities from an early age. She reportedly began speaking at just 10 months old, and her first words were said to be a plea to her father, persuading him against committing a sinful act. By the age of five, she could speak Latin fluently, even without formal lessons.

Tragedy struck when Giovanna was six years old, as her mother passed away. However, her father ensured she received a proper education and sent her to be educated by the Poor Clares of Trent, Italy, when she was just nine years old.

Intrigued by the religious life, Giovanna joined the Benedictine Order and became a nun at Bassano, Italy, on 8 September 1622. She took the name Maria Giovanna upon entering the order, and during the ceremony of her profession, she fell into ecstasy for the first time, a profound mystical experience.

Giovanna's spiritual journey continued to unfold as she received the stigmata at the age of 20, marked by the manifestation of the wounds of Christ on her body. Her devotion and commitment to her religious community led her to assume various leadership roles, including Novice Mistress, Prioress, and Abbess, serving her community with unwavering dedication.

However, not everyone understood or appreciated Giovanna's mystical experiences. She faced bitter persecution from some members of her own community, who doubted the authenticity of her dedication and divine encounters. Many accused her of promoting heretical ideas or seeking attention through her experiences.

Despite the challenges she faced, Giovanna remained steadfast in her faith and continued to live a life devoted to prayer, contemplation, and service to God and her community. Her profound spirituality and unshakeable commitment to her vows served as an inspiration to those around her.

Blessed Giovanna Maria Bonomo passed away on 1 March 1670, having dedicated her life to God and lived a virtuous existence. Her death was attributed to natural causes.
