Biography

Blessed Francesco Pianzola, also known as Francis Pianzola, is recognized as the Apostle of Lomellina for his dedicated and inspiring mission work among the poor and marginalized. He was born on 5 October 1881 in Sartirana Lomellina, Pavia, Italy, into a farming family.

Francisco's deep faith and desire to serve God led him to enter the seminary in Vigevano, Italy, where he received his priestly formation. He was ordained on 16 March 1907, and from then on, he dedicated his life to spreading the message of Christ's love and mercy to all he encountered.

One of Blessed Francesco Pianzola's notable characteristics was his passion for itinerant preaching. He committed himself to reaching out to various segments of society, especially those who were often forgotten or neglected. He ministered to the poor, visiting them in their homes and providing spiritual guidance, material assistance, and hope in times of need. Additionally, he went to the fields to support and accompany farm workers, conveying the message of God's presence and care even amidst their toil.

Recognizing the struggles faced by young women working in factories, Blessed Francesco Pianzola extended his ministry to them as well. He offered guidance, support, and a message of dignity and self-worth grounded in their faith. Inspired by his profound dedication, he founded the Suore Missionarie dell’Immacolata, Regina della Pace (Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate, Queen of Peace) based in Mortara, Italy. These sisters continued his work, following his example of bringing Christ to the poor, the humble, and the workers.

Blessed Francesco's devotion to his mission and tireless efforts to spread the Gospel made a significant impact on the lives of many people. His selfless service and unwavering commitment resulted in countless conversions and transformations. He became a beacon of hope and an instrument of God's grace in the lives of those he encountered.

On 4 June 1943, Blessed Francesco Pianzola passed away at the General House of the Sisters in Mortara, Pavia, Italy, due to natural causes. He was laid to rest at the General House of the Sisters, a place that had been an embodiment of his dedication and life's work.

The holy life and virtues of Blessed Francesco Pianzola were recognized by the Church, and he was venerated on 26 June 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI, who confirmed his heroic virtues. Later, on 4 October 2008, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, acknowledging his sanctity and granting him the title of Blessed. The beatification recognition ceremony was celebrated at the cathedral in Vigevano, Italy, by Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins.

Blessed Francesco Pianzola's legacy continues to inspire many to live out their faith with passion and compassion. His devotion to the marginalized and his missionary spirit serve as an example to all Catholics, encouraging them to actively engage with society's most vulnerable members and share the message of Christ's love and salvation.
