Feast Day: October 1
Death: October 1, 1
Blessed Christopher Buxton, also known as Blessed Christopher Button, was born in 1562 in Tideswell, Derbyshire, England. He grew up in a time of religious persecution during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a period marked by harsh penalties for those who adhered to the Catholic faith.
Blessed Christopher's early education and spiritual formation were guided by Blessed Nicholas Garlick, a prominent Catholic priest and martyr. Under Garlick's influence, he developed a strong dedication to his faith and a desire to serve as a priest. To pursue his vocation, Blessed Christopher left England and traveled to Reims, France in 1582, where he enrolled in seminary to study for the priesthood.
After completing his studies in Reims, Blessed Christopher continued his theological education at the English College in Rome, Italy. In 1584, he entered the college to further deepen his knowledge and spirituality. His time in Rome exposed him to the rich traditions and teachings of the Catholic Church, strengthening his resolve to serve God and his flock.
On 26 October 1586, Blessed Christopher was ordained a priest, empowered to administer the sacraments and provide spiritual guidance to the faithful. With a burning desire to support covert Catholics who faced persecution, he returned to England in September 1587. Despite the risks involved, he bravely ministered to those who sought to practice their faith in secret.
However, Blessed Christopher's mission of compassion was cut short when he was arrested in November 1587. He was imprisoned in Marshalsea and subsequently charged with the crime of being a priest, an offense punishable by death under Queen Elizabeth's regime. Despite the harsh conditions of his confinement, Blessed Christopher remained steadfast in his faith, drawing strength from his unwavering devotion to Christ.
On 1 October 1588, Blessed Christopher Buxton was executed by hanging, drawing, and quartering in Canterbury, Kent, England. His martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith and his dedication to ministering to those in need, despite the grave risks involved.
Blessed Christopher Buxton, along with other martyrs from the Douai region, is honored and venerated for his selfless sacrifice and unwavering loyalty to his faith. His feast day is celebrated on 1 October, and he is also recognized on 29 October as one of the Martyrs of Douai.
The Catholic Church officially recognized the martyrdom of Blessed Christopher Buxton on 8 December 1929, when Pope Pius XI declared him venerable. Just a week later, on 15 December 1929, Pope Pius XI beatified him, acknowledging his heroic virtue and martyrdom in defense of the Catholic faith. Blessed Christopher's life serves as an inspiration to all who strive to live out their faith with unwavering devotion, even in the face of great persecution.
