Biography

Blessed Carlos De Dios Murias, also known as Carlos de Dios Murias, was born on 10 October 1945 in San Carlos Minas, Córdoba, Argentina. Initially, he pursued a career in civil engineering, but he felt a strong calling to religious life and the priesthood. Answering this call, he joined the Order of Friars Minor Conventual and embarked on the path to priesthood.

On 17 December 1972, Carlos was ordained a priest in the Diocese of La Rioja, Argentina by Blessed Enrique Angelelli, who later became well-known for his involvement in championing the rights of the poor and oppressed. Carlos De Dios Murias became an active member of the Third World Movement of Priests, an organization that aimed to support and advocate for the marginalized and vulnerable communities.

One of Carlos's notable contributions was his collaboration with another blessed individual, Gabriel Longueville, in establishing a Franciscan community. Their primary objective was to assist the peasants in their economic struggles against powerful landowners, who often exploited and oppressed the rural population. Through their work, the Franciscan community provided guidance, support, and spiritual nourishment to those facing social injustices, empowering them to fight for their rights and improve their living conditions.

Sadly, Carlos's mission to fight for justice and equality came at a great cost. As a result of his tireless efforts to uplift the oppressed, Carlos became a target of the Federal Police, who opposed his work. He was kidnapped, imprisoned, and subjected to unspeakable torture. Eventually, on 18 July 1976, Carlos De Dios Murias was shot and martyred in Chamical, La Rioja, Argentina.

The sacrificial death of Carlos highlighted his unwavering commitment to serving the most vulnerable in society, even in the face of grave danger. His martyrdom represents his steadfast devotion to his faith and the principles he held dear. As a result of his martyrdom and dedication to social justice, Carlos De Dios Murias was posthumously recognized for his heroic virtues.

On 8 June 2018, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging Carlos's ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of justice. On 27 April 2019, Pope Francis then proceeded to beatify Carlos De Dios Murias in a ceremony held in La Rioja, Argentina. The beatification recognition celebration was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu.

Today, Blessed Carlos De Dios Murias is venerated as a martyr and role model for those fighting for justice and equality. His feast day is celebrated on 18 July each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom. While the details of his representation are not specified in the available information, his legacy lives on as a source of inspiration and faith for many. Carlos De Dios Murias is interred in the municipal cemetery in Chamical, where his memory continues to be cherished.
