Feast Day: May 22
Saint Zota of Cyrene, also known as Ioata or Ioathas, was a martyr who lived during the persecutions of Emperor Maximian in the early 4th century. Not much is known about his early life, but he was believed to have been born in Cyrene, which is located in modern-day Libya. During this time, Christianity was heavily persecuted, and Zota was arrested by Judge Dadio for his allegiance to the faith. Despite facing extreme torture and pressure to renounce his Christian beliefs, Zota remained steadfast in his devotion to Jesus Christ. Zota's refusal to sacrifice to the pagan gods enraged his captors, leading to even more brutal torture. Despite the immense pain and suffering inflicted upon him, Zota stood firm and continued to profess his Christian faith. The persecution continued, and Zota was repeatedly ordered to renounce his Christian beliefs and offer sacrifices to the gods. Each time, he steadfastly refused and demonstrated unwavering faith in his Lord. His courage and unwavering conviction became an inspiration to other Christians enduring persecution during that time. Eventually, Zota's incredible resilience and unyielding faith led to his martyrdom. He was put to death, and his body was buried in a hidden grave in order to prevent his veneration as a martyr. However, his story does not end there. Bishop Teodorus, a devout Christian, deeply desired to recover Zota's body and give it a proper burial. He prayed fervently, asking for guidance. Miraculously, two oxen hitched to a cart led Bishop Teodorus to the burial spot. They stopped directly in front of Zota's hidden grave, refusing to move any further. With unwavering faith and gratitude, Bishop Teodorus recovered Zota's body and loaded it onto the cart. The oxen then set off again, but this time, they stopped near Adradianes, Italy. They refused to move until a church was built to enshrine the relics of Zota. Following this miraculous journey, a church was constructed to honor Saint Zota and house his relics. Today, some of his relics are enshrined in the city of Belluno, Italy. Saint Zota of Cyrene's feast day is celebrated on May 22nd, commemorating his martyrdom and the triumph of his faith in the face of persecution. He is venerated as a patron saint of Belluno, Italy, and his life serves as a powerful example of unwavering devotion and courage in the face of adversity. Saint Zota was canonized before the establishment of the formal canonization process by the Catholic Church, and he is recognized as a martyr for his faith.
