Saint Zama of Bologna, also known as Zamas, was the first known bishop of Bologna, Italy. He was consecrated as bishop by Pope Saint Dionysius around the year 260. Not much is known about his early life or family background, but his contributions to the early Christian community in Bologna have left a lasting legacy. Saint Zama's time as bishop in Bologna was marked by his strong leadership, pastoral care, and dedication to spreading the Christian faith. He faced numerous challenges during a time of persecution against Christians, but he remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his flock. As bishop, Saint Zama worked tirelessly to strengthen the local Christian community in Bologna. He established a vibrant local church, implemented sound governance, and ordained priests to help spread the Gospel message. His efforts resulted in the growth of the Christian community, with more people embracing the teachings of Christ. Saint Zama's dedication and righteousness earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow clergy and the local community. His reputation as a wise and compassionate bishop spread beyond Bologna, and he became known for his holiness and piety. Saint Zama's tenure as bishop came to an end around the year 268 when he passed away from natural causes. His relics were later translated from the Church of the Crucifix in Saint Stephen to the cathedral of Saint Peter in Bologna around the year 1500. Today, he rests in eternal peace, buried next to another revered saint, Saint Faustinianus. Although Saint Zama's representation is not known, his feast days are celebrated on 28 September and 24 January on some calendars. His canonization took place before the formal establishment of canonization processes, thus falling within the Pre-Congregation era. While Saint Zama does not have a specific patronage associated with him, as a revered bishop and saint, he is seen as a model for all bishops and a source of inspiration for Catholic faithful.
