Biography

Saint Yusuf Jurj Kassab Alhardini, also known as Nimatullah al-Hardini or Nimatullah Youssef Kassab Al-Hardini, was born in 1808 in Hardine, Batrun, Ash Shamal, Lebanon. From an early age, he showed a deep religious inclination and a strong desire to serve God. As a young man, he was educated by the monks of San Antonio Aban, which laid the foundation for his future spiritual journey. In 1828, Yusuf Jurj entered the Maronite Order and took the name Father Nimatullah. He initially worked as a bookbinder of religious works in his monastery. However, his dedication and commitment to his faith led him to study theology and philosophy. After completing his studies, he was ordained as a priest in 1833. Father Nimatullah's deep spirituality and strong devotion to Christ and Mary quickly became apparent. He was known for his zeal for the faith and his fervent prayer life. As a result, he was appointed as the spiritual director and novice master in his monastery, a role that allowed him to guide and inspire others in their spiritual journey. Father Nimatullah's reputation as a wise and holy man continued to grow, and he was eventually chosen to be part of the General Council of the Maronite Order. He played an influential role in the governance and administration of the Order, contributing his wisdom and spiritual guidance to the community. One of Father Nimatullah's most notable disciples was Saint Charbel Mahklouf, who became one of the most revered saints of the Maronite Church. Father Nimatullah served as Charbel's spiritual teacher, guiding him on the path of virtue and deepening his spiritual life. On December 14, 1858, Father Nimatullah passed away in Kfifan, Batrun, Ash Shamal, Lebanon. His remains were found to be incorrupt and are currently preserved at the monastery in Kfifan, becoming an object of veneration for the faithful. The holy life of Father Nimatullah did not go unnoticed, and on September 7, 1989, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing his sanctity. This declaration led to his beatification on May 10, 1998, and ultimately, his canonization on May 16, 2004, reaffirming his status as a beloved saint of the Catholic Church. Although Saint Yusuf Jurj Kassab Alhardini does not have a specific patronage associated with him, his life and teachings continue to inspire and guide countless individuals in their spiritual journey. His example of devotion, prayer, and service to God serves as an inspiration for all those seeking a deeper relationship with God and a life of holiness.
