Biography

Saint Wulstan of Worcester, also known as Vulstano, Wolstan, and Wulfstan, was born around the year 1009 in Icentum, Warwickshire, England. He was the son of Athelstan and Wulfgeva. From a young age, Wulstan demonstrated great piety and devotion to the Church. As a youth, Wulstan studied at the monasteries of Evesham and Peterborough. His parents, seeking a deeper spiritual life, joined separate monasteries in Worcester while Wulstan was still a young man. Wulstan, inspired by his parents' example, embraced the religious life and was ordained a priest. He served his parish with great dedication, leading by example through his pious and virtuous life. He also taught catechism to children and diligently fulfilled the responsibility of church treasurer. In 1062, Wulstan became a monk in Worcester. His reputation for holiness and humility continued to grow, and he was appointed as the Bishop of Worcester. As Bishop, Wulstan continued to display great humility and lived an ascetic life, renouncing worldly luxuries and possessions. Saint Wulstan was particularly known for his inspirational preaching, which touched the hearts of many. His sermons were filled with wisdom and guidance, attracting large crowds who sought to be inspired by his words. He also made pastoral visits, becoming one of the first bishops in England to personally visit the parishes of his diocese. Through his pastoral care, he sought to bring comfort and guidance to the people under his spiritual care. One significant accomplishment by Saint Wulstan was his instrumental role in ending the sale of Irish prisoners as slaves in England. His compassion and dedication to justice led him to advocate for the rights and freedom of those who were unjustly treated. Saint Wulstan died in 1095 of natural causes, leaving behind an enduring legacy of holiness and service to others. His canonization took place on May 14, 1203, by Pope Innocent III. Though there is no specific patronage attributed to Saint Wulstan, his life and example serve as an inspiration for all who seek to live a life of piety, humility, and service to others. Saint Wulstan of Worcester's feast day is celebrated on January 20th each year.
