Biography

Saint Wulganus, also known as Vulgan, Vulganius, Wulgan, Vulganio, and Vulmar, was an emigrant from the British Isles who became an influential figure in evangelizing the area of Atrebati, France. Although specific details about his birthplace in the British Isles vary in different sources, it is believed that he was born in the early 7th century. Saint Wulganus dedicated his life to the spread of Christianity and embarked on a mission to bring the teachings of the Catholic Church to the people of France. He arrived in Atrebati, France, and proceeded to engage with the local population, sharing his deep faith and converting many to Christianity through his powerful sermons. After his successful evangelization work, Saint Wulganus felt called to a life of solitude and contemplation. He sought the guidance of Saint Vedast Abbey, an esteemed monastic community, and became a hermit at Arras, France. Under the direction of the abbey, Saint Wulganus embraced the ascetic lifestyle of a hermit and dedicated his days to prayer, meditation, and deepening his relationship with God. Saint Wulganus lived out the remainder of his life in solitude, devoting himself to God in the hermitage at Arras. Although there is no specific representation associated with Saint Wulganus, his spiritual presence and teachings deeply resonated with those who encountered him during his time as an evangelist and later as a hermit. Saint Wulganus passed away around the year 704 in Arras, France. According to historical accounts, he was buried at Christ Church in Canterbury, England, specifically in a chest situated beyond the altar of Saint Stephen. Some of his relics can also be found in Liesse and Lens, France. Recognizing his profound holiness and the impact he had on the people of Lens, France, Saint Wulganus was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. His canonization occurred before the institution of formal canonization processes, thus placing him in the category of Pre-Congregation saints. Today, Saint Wulganus is honored as the patron saint of Lens, France. His feast day is celebrated on November 3rd each year, commemorating the day of his death and the divine life he lived in service to God and others.
