Feast Day: April 15
Saint Victorinus of Rome, also known as Victorinus of Ponza, was a Christian martyr who lived during the period of the early persecutions of Trajan in Rome, Italy. Little is known about his early life, and it is believed that he was a Roman citizen. Victorinus is best known for his close friendship with Saint Flavia Domitilla, a niece of the Roman Emperor Domitian. When Emperor Domitian began his persecution of Christians around the year 95, Saint Flavia Domitilla was among those who were targeted. Victorinus stood by her side and accompanied her in exile to the island of Ponza. It was during their time in exile that Victorinus embraced the Christian faith, inspired by the unwavering devotion and courage of Flavia Domitilla. After several years of exile on the island, Trajan took the throne as the Roman Emperor and intensified the persecution of Christians. Victorinus and Flavia Domitilla were eventually captured and brought back to Rome to face trial. Despite their shared love for Christianity, Victorinus and Flavia Domitilla were not related by blood. In Rome, Victorinus and Flavia Domitilla faced severe torture and were asked repeatedly to renounce their faith. However, they remained steadfast in their devotion, refusing to abandon their belief in Christ. Their unwavering commitment led to their martyrdom, as both were put to death for their refusal to renounce their Christian beliefs. While much of Victorinus's life is shrouded in mystery, his martyrdom and unwavering faith have immortalized him in history as a true Christian hero. Though the exact details of his martyrdom are scarce, his dedication to his beliefs and his friendship with Saint Flavia Domitilla have made him an inspiration for generations to come. Saint Victorinus of Rome, although not formally canonized by the Catholic Church before the institution of the canonization process, is widely venerated as a saint. His feast day is observed on April 15th, a day that commemorates his martyrdom in Rome, Italy. While he is not currently associated with any specific patronage, his courage and faithfulness serve as an exemplary model for all Christians.
