Biography

Saint Victorinus of Assisi, also known as Vittorino, was a bishop who lived during the mid-3rd century in Assisi, Italy. He was chosen for this position by Pope Fabian and served the community faithfully. Little is known about Saint Victorinus' early life, but it is believed that he was born in Assyria, a region known for its Christian communities during that time. After being appointed as the bishop of Assisi, he dedicated himself to nurturing and guiding his flock in the ways of the faith. Serving as bishop during a time of great persecution, Saint Victorinus faced immense challenges. The Roman Emperor Gordian III initiated a wave of persecutions against Christians, seeking to suppress their growing influence. Despite the dangers and threats, Saint Victorinus remained steadfast in his commitment to the Christian faith and fearlessly preached the Gospel. In the midst of the persecution, Saint Victorinus was martyred alongside several of his companions. They were executed by beheading outside of Assisi, near a bridge over the River Tescio. This bridge came to be known as the Ponte San Vittorino, in honor of the saint. The site of their execution later became the location of the Monastero di San Vittorino, a monastery built in their memory. Saint Victorinus' relics were enshrined within the monastery. Over time, the relics of Saint Victorinus were moved to various places. They were initially housed under the high altar in the Abbazia di San Pietro, but in 1642, they were relocated to a side altar. These relics consisted of bones and linen soaked with the saint's blood, symbolizing his martyrdom. Finally, in 1954, the relics were placed behind a grating at the high altar for veneration. Saint Victorinus of Assisi was canonized by the Catholic Church in the Pre-Congregation era. Although he does not have a specified patronage, his legacy as a faithful bishop and martyr continues to inspire Christians today. While there are no specific representations attributed to Saint Victorinus, his memory is celebrated on June 13th each year, providing an opportunity for the faithful to honor and remember his great sacrifice and unwavering devotion to the Christian faith.
