Biography

Saint Vicelin of Oldenburg, also known as the Apostle of Holstein and Apostle of Obodriten, was born around 1088 in the castle at Hemeln on the Weser, Lower Saxony, Germany. He came from a noble family but was orphaned at a young age. Despite this setback, Vicelin pursued his education and studied at Hameln, Germany, and the cathedral school of Paderborn, Germany. Vicelin's dedication to his studies led him to become a canon at Bremen, Germany, where he also served as a teacher and principal of the school. During this time, he became a spiritual student of Saint Norbert of Magdeburg, who ordained him. In autumn 1126, Vicelin embarked on a missionary journey to the Wagrian Wends in northeastern Germany. He also spread the message of Christianity to the Slavic people in the surrounding areas. Vicelin's missionary work was centered on building monasteries, and he founded significant establishments at Neumunster, Holstein, Segeberg, and Hogersdorf. Despite Vicelin's efforts, much of what he had built and accomplished was destroyed in 1147 by a series of raids carried out by pirates. Along with several of his priests, Vicelin was forced to flee back to the Empire. However, his determination remained unshaken. In 1149, Vicelin was appointed Bishop of Oldenburg, Germany. Known for the spirituality of his flock and his good works for the poor, he continued to dedicate himself to promoting the message of Christ. His last two years were marked by suffering as he experienced a painful paralysis of the right side of his body, resulting from an apparent heart attack and stroke. Saint Vicelin passed away on 12 December 1154 at Neumunster, Lorraine, France, due to natural causes. In 1332, his remains were re-interred in front of the altar in Bordesholm. Throughout his life, Vicelin displayed immense devotion to his faith and the spread of Christianity. In representations, Saint Vicelin is often depicted as a bishop with a church sitting on his left arm, symbolizing his role as a spiritual leader. Although he is not associated with a specific patronage, he is venerated as an example of true Christian dedication and missionary zeal. Saint Vicelin's feast day is celebrated on 12 December, commemorating the day of his death. His truly inspiring life serves as a reminder of the resilience and unwavering faith of those who strive to spread the Gospel.
