Death: May 18, 1866
Saint Tomaseu Son Chason, also known as Tomaseu Son Ja-Seon, Tomás, Thomas, or Tommaso, was a Korean layman who dedicated his life to spreading Christianity in his native country during a time of intense persecution. Born in 1839 in Deoksan, Chungcheong-do, Korea, he grew up in a devout Catholic family. From an early age, Tomaseu displayed a deep love for his faith and a strong desire to serve God. He felt a calling to work alongside Catholic missionaries in order to bring the message of Christ to the Korean people. Despite being a layman, Tomaseu actively engaged in evangelization efforts, using his skills as a teacher to share the Christian message with those willing to listen. During this period in Korea's history, Christians faced severe persecution from the Joseon dynasty, which saw the growing influence of Christianity as a threat to its power. Tomaseu and his fellow believers faced relentless persecution, which only served to strengthen their resolve. Despite the danger, they continued to spread the faith, risking their lives for the sake of the gospel. In 1866, Tomaseu was arrested by authorities for his involvement in spreading Catholicism. He was subsequently imprisoned in Gongju Prison, Chungcheong-do, Korea, where he suffered unspeakable cruelty and endured harsh conditions. Throughout his imprisonment, Tomaseu remained steadfast in his faith, offering encouragement and support to his fellow prisoners, many of whom were also believers. On May 18, 1866, Saint Tomaseu Son Chason was martyred for his unwavering dedication to Christianity. He steadfastly refused to renounce his faith even in the face of extreme torment and persecution. His profound resilience inspired many who witnessed his unwavering faith. In recognition of his martyrdom, Pope Paul VI proclaimed Saint Tomaseu Venerable on July 4, 1968. Just a few months later, on October 6, 1968, he was beatified by the same pope, who recognized his exceptional devotion and sacrifice. Finally, on May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II elevated him to sainthood, canonizing him as Saint Tomaseu Son Chason. Today, Saint Tomaseu Son Chason serves as a powerful example of courage, resilience, and unwavering faith. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire Christians around the world, particularly those facing persecution for their beliefs. His feast day is celebrated on May 18th each year, serving as a reminder of his enduring legacy and the sacrifices made by countless individuals who have given their lives for the sake of the gospel.
