Biography

Saint Thethmar, also known as Theodemar, was a Premonstratensian canon and a missionary in Germany. He is best known for his work among the Wends, a Slavic people residing in present-day northeastern Germany. Thethmar's life and mission are closely connected with another renowned Catholic saint, Saint Vicelin of Oldenburg. The two worked together in spreading the Gospel among the Wends and were instrumental in establishing churches and monastic communities in the region. Born in an unknown year, Thethmar joined the Premonstratensian Order, a religious community founded by Saint Norbert of Xanten. This order was known for its commitment to evangelical poverty, communal life, and active apostolate. Thethmar's missionary journey began in the early 12th century, as he and Saint Vicelin traveled to the lands inhabited by the Wends. They encountered numerous challenges, including the resistance of the pagan tribes who inhabited the area. However, their commitment to their mission and their love for the Wends enabled them to face these difficulties with courage and perseverance. Thethmar and Vicelin tirelessly preached the Gospel, establishing churches, and baptizing the local population. They believed in the power of education and founded monastic schools to educate the Wends and provide them with knowledge and guidance. These efforts aimed not only to spread Christianity but also to uplift the Wends spiritually and socially. Thethmar's zeal for evangelization was matched by his unwavering dedication to a life of holiness. As a Premonstratensian canon, he embraced the values of prayer, self-denial, and communal living. His example inspired both fellow clergymen and the Wends, who admired his devotion to God. On May 17, 1152, Thethmar passed away, leaving behind a legacy of faith and missionary work. Although Saint Thethmar's representation is unknown, his memory lives on in the hearts of those who continue to celebrate his feast day on May 17. While Saint Thethmar's patronage is not specified, his life and mission serve as an inspiration to missionaries, monastic communities, and all who strive to spread the Gospel and live a life of holiness. His story reminds us of the transformative power of faith and love, even in the face of challenges and adversity.
