Feast Day: April 20
Saint Theotimus of Tomi, also known as Theotimus of Scytha, was a prominent figure in the early Christian Church. He was born in an unknown date and place, and little is known about his early life. However, it is believed that he was of Roman descent. Theotimus rose to prominence when he became the Bishop of Scytha, also known as Tomi, a city located on the Black Sea coast, in present-day Romania. As bishop, he led a virtuous and exemplary life, earning the respect and admiration not only of the Christian population but also of the barbarian tribes in the region. One of Saint Theotimus' notable contributions to the Church was his defense of the teachings of Origen, a controversial figure during that time. Origen's teachings had been condemned by Saint Epiphanius of Salamis, a prominent bishop and theologian. However, Theotimus, recognizing the depth and theological significance of Origen's works, stood up in defense of the theologian. His courage in defending Origen's teachings exemplified his deep commitment to intellectual and theological pursuits. In addition to his intellectual pursuits, Theotimus embarked on numerous evangelization missions. He dedicated himself to spreading the Gospel and bringing Christianity to the tribes residing in the Lower Danube region. Despite the challenges and dangers that awaited him, Theotimus fearlessly faced the barbarian tribes, earning their trust and respect through his piety and sincere devotion to God. Saint Theotimus of Tomi died in the year 407 AD, succumbing to natural causes. His passing was deeply mourned by the Christian community, as they had lost a great spiritual leader and advocate for the faith. While Saint Theotimus has not been officially recognized as a patron saint or given a specific representation, his sanctity and contributions to the early Christian Church are acknowledged and continue to inspire believers today. Although Saint Theotimus lived prior to the establishment of the official canonization process by the Catholic Church, his holiness and example of Christian devotion were recognized by the faithful. As a result, he was revered as a saint even before the formal canonization process was introduced. Today, Saint Theotimus of Tomi is commemorated on April 20th, the day of his feast. His life bears witness to the power of faith, intellect, and evangelization, embodying the qualities of a true follower of Christ. His legacy serves as a reminder to believers of the importance of defending and spreading the Gospel, even in the face of adversity.
