Biography

Saint Theonas of Egypt, also known as Theonas the Hermit, was a revered monk who lived during the early 4th century. Born in Egypt, little is known about his early life and family background. Theonas devoted himself to a monastic lifestyle while residing in two prominent locations within Egypt—Thebaid and el-Bahnasa. Both regions were known for their rich spiritual heritage and attracted many ascetics and monks seeking a life of seclusion and contemplation. Theonas embraced this solitude and dedicated his life to prayer and fasting, seeking deeper union with God. One of the stories often associated with Saint Theonas depicts him near a well, surrounded by various wild animals. This representation is significant because it refers to a particular event in his life. It is said that Theonas was known for his kindness towards animals and would regularly provide them with water and care.
