Biography

Saint Theogenes of Hippo, also known as Theogenes of Bona, Theogenes of Ippona, and Teógene, was a third-century bishop of Hippo in North Africa. He is known for his martyrdom during the persecutions of Emperor Valerian. Not much is known about the early life of Saint Theogenes of Hippo. He was believed to have been born in the third century, and his exact birth date is unknown. As a bishop, he was actively involved in the early Christian community in Hippo. One significant event in the life of Saint Theogenes was his participation in the Council of Carthage, which was called by Saint Cyprian around the year 250. This council addressed important theological and disciplinary matters, such as the treatment of those who had renounced their faith under persecution. The council played a crucial role in the development of the early Christian Church in North Africa. During the reign of Emperor Valerian, a period known for its fierce persecution of Christians, Saint Theogenes and 36 of his flock faced martyrdom. The exact circumstances of his martyrdom are not well-documented, but it is believed that he remained firm in his faith even in the face of great adversity. Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential theologians and philosophers in Christian history, wrote about Saint Theogenes of Hippo in his works. Augustine admired Theogenes for his unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution. Although not much is known about Saint Theogenes' appearance or specific miracles attributed to him, his memory and martyrdom have been honored throughout history. His feast day is celebrated on January 26th, commemorating his martyrdom. Saint Theogenes of Hippo was canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church, but it was before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. As a result, his canonization took place during the Pre-Congregation era, and he is therefore considered a pre-congregation saint. While Saint Theogenes of Hippo does not have a specified patronage, his story serves as an inspiration to all Christians who face persecution for their faith. He exemplifies the unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church, even in the face of great danger and difficulty.
