Feast Day: July 17
Saint Theodota of Constantinople, also known as Theodote, was born into the noble aristocracy of Constantinople during the 8th century. Not much is known about her early life or family background, but her devout faith and devotion to Christ marked her out as a remarkable individual from an early age. During her time, the Byzantine Empire was embroiled in the iconoclastic controversy. Emperor Leo the Isaurian initiated a fierce persecution of those who venerated icons, considering it a form of idolatry. Saint Theodota firmly opposed these iconoclast policies, refusing to renounce her faith and veneration of holy images. Her unwavering commitment to her beliefs eventually led to her martyrdom. Saint Theodota bravely resisted the iconoclast authorities and refused to partake in any act against the veneration of icons. As a result, she endured imprisonment, torture, and various forms of humiliation designed to make her abandon her faith. However, she remained steadfast, finding strength in her love for Christ. Finally, after enduring harrowing trials, Saint Theodota's earthly life was brought to an end. She was martyred in the year 735 in the city of Constantinople, modern-day Istanbul, Turkey. Even in her death, she remained unwavering in her beliefs and became an inspiration for Christians of the time who continued to face persecution. Despite her courageous witness and the impact she made on the Christian community of Constantinople, Saint Theodota's representation in art and iconography remains unknown. However, her memory and example continue to be commemorated on her feast day, which falls on the 17th of July. Though Saint Theodota's canonization occurred before the establishment of the formal process of canonization by the Catholic Church, her sanctity and martyrdom were recognized by the early Christian community. She is considered a saint and revered for her unwavering faith and martyrdom in defense of the veneration of icons. While specific patronages are not traditionally associated with Saint Theodota, she can be venerated as a role model and intercessor for those seeking strength and courage to stand firm in their faith, particularly in the face of persecution and opposition to their beliefs. Many Christians today look to Saint Theodota as a symbol of steadfastness and a reminder of the price some have paid for their commitment to Christ.
