Death: January 1, 362
Saint Theodoret of Antioch, also known as Theodore, Teodoreto, or Theodoritus, was a Priest in Antioch, located in modern-day Turkey. He served as the treasurer of the diocese and made significant contributions to the elimination of paganism in the region during his time. Born in Antioch, Saint Theodoret felt a strong calling to dedicate his life to the service of God and His Church from an early age. Gifted with intellectual prowess and a deep understanding of theology, he embraced the priesthood and quickly rose through the ranks, gaining esteem for his wisdom, piety, and dedication to his flock. As the treasurer of the Antiochian diocese, Saint Theodoret displayed remarkable financial management skills, ensuring the efficient use and distribution of resources to support the needs of both the clergy and the people. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he remained devoted to his priestly duties, diligently celebrating the Mass and shepherding the faithful. During his time in Antioch, Saint Theodoret faced great challenges, particularly in the form of persecution under the reign of Julian the Apostate. Julian, who had renounced Christianity and sought to reestablish paganism, ordered Saint Theodoret to surrender the sacred vessels used in the Eucharistic celebration. Refusing to comply and steadfast in his faith, Saint Theodoret endured imprisonment, torture, and ultimately martyrdom for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. In 362, he was beheaded in Antioch, Syria (present-day Antakya, Turkey). According to accounts of his martyrdom, Saint Theodoret's executioners claimed to have witnessed celestial beings surrounding him, indicating his purity of spirit. These divine signs further authenticated his sanctity and demonstrated the favor of Heaven upon him. Although Saint Theodoret did not receive a formal canonization process due to the period in which he lived, he is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on October 23, although in certain calendars, it is observed on October 22. Saint Theodoret of Antioch, through his exemplary life as a priest and martyr, continues to inspire the faithful to stay true to their beliefs in the face of adversity. His unwavering commitment to defending the sacred treasures of the Mass serves as a timeless example of fidelity and devotion to the Catholic Church.
