Feast Day: November 6
Death: November 6, 1070
Saint Theobald of Dorat, also known as Theobald of Bazeuge, was born in 990 in the small village of Bazeuge, France, to a humble and devout farming family. From an early age, he exhibited a deep reverence for the Catholic faith and a desire to serve God. In pursuit of his spiritual calling, Theobald became a student of Saint Israel of Limoges at the monastery in Dorat, France. Under the guidance of his mentor, Theobald delved into the depths of theological knowledge and embraced the Augustinian way of life. Deeply affected by Saint Israel's teachings, Theobald subsequently chose to become an Augustinian canon. Ordained as a deacon, Theobald humbly considered himself unworthy of the priesthood, despite his evident piety and dedication to God. Instead, he decided to serve the church in other capacities, taking on the roles of treasurer and sacristan in the churches of Dorat. His financial acumen and meticulous attention to the sacred vessels and vestments earned him great respect among the community. However, Theobald's commitment to the church extended far beyond mere administrative duties. He had a heartfelt ministry to the sick and the poor, regularly visiting them, offering comfort, and providing assistance. His compassion and love for those in need made him a beloved figure in Dorat, and he became known for his generous acts of charity. Moreover, Theobald's devotion to the Church and his knowledge of theology led him to become a respected teacher. He took on the role of a spiritual director, imparting his wisdom and guiding those seeking a deeper understanding of their faith. One of his notable disciples was Saint Gauthier, who went on to become a renowned spiritual figure in his own right. Saint Theobald of Dorat died on November 6, 1070, of natural causes. His relics were enshrined in the collegiate church of Dorat, alongside those of his mentor, Saint Israel of Limoges. Though Theobald was not formally canonized by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, his sanctity was widely recognized within the pre-congregational era. Throughout his life, Saint Theobald of Dorat exemplified the virtues of humility, selflessness, and devotion to God. His unwavering commitment to serving the Church and his dedication to the spiritual well-being of others left a lasting impact in the community of Dorat. Today, he serves as an inspiration for all those seeking to lead a life rooted in faith and charity.
