Feast Day: July 16
Death: July 1, 16
Saint Teresia Zhang Heshi, also known as Teresa Zhang Hezhi or Delan, was a married lay woman and mother in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. She was born around 1864 in Yuan, Ningjing, Hebei, China. Teresia's life was marked by her steadfast faith and dedication to her Christian beliefs. In the late 19th century, China was facing a tumultuous period, particularly for Christians during the Boxer Rebellion. As the anti-foreign and anti-Christian sentiment grew in the country, Christians faced persecution and were forced to renounce their faith. Teresia found herself in the midst of this turmoil when she was dragged into a pagan temple and ordered to renounce her Christianity. Despite the intense pressure and threat to her life, she remained steadfast in her faith, refusing to renounce Christ. Teresia's bravery and unwavering commitment to her belief in Jesus Christ ultimately led to her martyrdom. On July 16, 1900, she was stabbed with a spear in Zhangjiaji, Ningjing, Hebei, China, sealing her place as a martyr for the faith. Her sacrifice and refusal to renounce Christianity made her an inspiring example for all believers, even in the face of persecution. In recognition of her martyrdom, Pope Pius XII, on February 22, 1955, venerated Teresia, declaring her a martyr through a decree. With this declaration, she was acknowledged as one who had given her life in defense of her faith. Pope Pius XII further honored her by beatifying her on April 17, 1955, recognizing her exceptional holiness and the example she set for others. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Teresia Zhang Heshi, officially adding her to the list of saints in the Catholic Church. Although not known for a specific patronage, Saint Teresia Zhang Heshi serves as an inspiration to all Christians, especially those who face persecution for their faith. Her unwavering commitment to Christ, even unto death, is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit and the power of faith. She stands as a shining example of courage and steadfastness, reminding believers of the price that some have paid for their faith throughout history.
