Biography

Saint Teresia Chen Qingjieh, also known as Delan or Teresa Chen Jinxie, was a lay woman in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China. She was born around the year 1875 in Feng, Jizhou, Hebei, China. Not much is known about Teresia's early life, but she grew up in a time of great turmoil and persecution for Catholics in China. The Boxer Rebellion, a violent uprising against foreign influence and Christian presence, was a significant challenge for the Catholic community in China. Teresia lived her life as a devoted Catholic, seeking to strengthen her faith and serve God through her daily actions. She was known for her piety, humility, and unwavering commitment to her beliefs. Despite living in a volatile and dangerous period, she remained steadfast in her devotion to the Catholic Church. In 1900, as the Boxer Rebellion intensified, Teresia found herself caught in the midst of the violence and persecution. On the 5th of July of that year, she was brutally martyred in Cao, Ningjing, Hebei, China. Teresia was stabbed with spears, sacrificing her life for her faith. After her death, Teresia's reputation for holiness and martyrdom began to spread among the Catholic community in China. Her heroic witness and steadfast commitment to her faith inspired many. The local faithful soon started to venerate her as a saintly figure and as a martyr for the Catholic faith. Acknowledging her extraordinary virtue and the sacrifice she made, Pope Pius XII issued a decree of martyrdom on the 22nd of February 1955, officially recognizing Teresia Chen Qingjieh as a martyr. This declaration laid the foundation for her further recognition and veneration within the Catholic Church. On the 17th of April 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified Teresia Chen Qingjieh, officially conferring upon her the title of "Blessed." Her beatification affirmed her sanctity and allowed for her public veneration in certain dioceses and religious communities. Realizing the widespread devotion and recognition of Teresia's holiness, Pope John Paul II, on the 1st of October 2000, canonized her as a saint. This official act of the Catholic Church declared Teresia Chen Qingjieh a saint, affirming her status as a model of faith and virtue for the faithful. Although not designated as a specific patron of any cause or group, Saint Teresia Chen Qingjieh serves as an inspiring example of courage and fidelity to the Catholic faith. Her life and martyrdom stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Chinese Catholic community during a particularly challenging period in history. Today, she is venerated and remembered on her feast day, the 5th of July. Saint Teresia Chen Qingjieh continues to inspire countless individuals with her unwavering devotion, offering a model of faithfulness and grace amid adversity.
