Biography

Saint Richard of Vaucelles, also known as Richard de l'Estang or Richard of Rivecourt, was an English Cistercian monk and renowned abbot of Vaucelles Abbey in France. He was appointed to this esteemed position by none other than Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the founder of the Cistercian Order. Born in England, Saint Richard dedicated his life to the pursuit of holiness and spiritual growth. Drawn by the Cistercian way of life, known for its emphasis on simplicity, austerity, and contemplative prayer, he joined Vaucelles Abbey, located in the Diocese of Cambrai, at a young age. Under the guidance of Saint Bernard, Richard's spiritual life flourished, and he quickly earned a reputation for his piety, wisdom, and administrative abilities. In recognition of his exceptional qualities, Saint Bernard appointed Richard as the abbot of Vaucelles Abbey. As an abbot, Richard took on the important responsibility of overseeing the spiritual and temporal affairs of the abbey and its community of monks. He was known for his firm but gentle leadership style, ensuring both the spiritual and material well-being of those under his care. Saint Richard's tenure as the abbot of Vaucelles Abbey was marked by a deep commitment to the ideals of the Cistercian Order. He worked tirelessly to maintain the observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict, a set of guidelines for monastic life, and to uphold the spirit of simplicity and humility within the community. Saint Richard's balanced approach to monastic administration earned him the respect and admiration of both his fellow monks and the broader Church community. Beyond his administrative duties, Saint Richard was revered for his personal holiness and spiritual insight. He dedicated considerable time to prayer, meditation, and the study of scripture, seeking a deeper union with God. His profound love for Christ and the Gospel was evident in his humility, selflessness, and commitment to serving others. Saint Richard of Vaucelles passed away in 1169, succumbing to natural causes. His death was deeply mourned both within the abbey and among those who knew of his holiness and virtues. The legacy of Saint Richard as a man of God, a skilled administrator, and a faithful follower of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux continues to inspire and guide Cistercians and all those seeking a life devoted to Christ. Although Saint Richard of Vaucelles does not currently have any specific patronages attributed to him, his exemplary life as a Cistercian monk and abbot serves as a model for those seeking spiritual growth, humility, and dedication to the monastic way of life. His feast day is celebrated on January 28th, a day dedicated to remembering and honoring his life and contributions to the Church.
