Biography

Saint Spérie, also known as Espérie or Exupérie, was born into a wealthy and influential family to Duke Serenus. Her birth took place in the Saint-Sérène manor, located in the area of modern-day Saint-Céré, France. From an early age, Spérie displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to dedicate her life to serving Him. However, her family had other plans for her. They arranged a marriage with Lord Elidius, a neighboring nobleman. Determined to follow her calling and live a life of solitude and prayer, Spérie made a difficult decision. She disguised herself as a peasant and left her home, seeking refuge as a hermitess in the solitary wilderness. Spérie found shelter in the hollow of a tree, where she could be close to nature and God. Despite her peaceful and hidden existence, news of her whereabouts eventually reached her brother, Clarus. Upon learning of her escape and refusal to return home, he became enraged and set out to bring her back forcefully. When Clarus finally tracked down Spérie, he confronted her and demanded that she abandon her solitary life. However, Spérie remained resolute in her decision. Unfortunately, her brother's anger grew to such an extent that he ultimately murdered her in an act of rage. As a result of her unwavering faith and her willingness to sacrifice everything for her devotion to God, Saint Spérie became a martyr. Legend speaks of a miraculous event that occurred following her brutal death. It is said that her lifeless body miraculously picked up its severed head and carried it to a nearby stream, intending to wash away the blood. Saint Spérie was buried in the crypt beneath the parish church of Saint-Céré, France. Her devotion and martyrdom did not go unnoticed, as she was recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church in the Pre-Congregation era. Her feast day is celebrated on the 12th of October. Although Saint Spérie does not have any specific representations or patronages associated with her, she holds a dear place in the hearts of the people of Saint-Céré, France, who see her as a holy and inspirational figure.
