Feast Day: February 10
Death: February 1, 10
Saint Soteris The Martyr, also known as Soteris of Rome, was a remarkable figure of the 3rd century. Born into a wealthy noble family, Soteris chose to dedicate her life to God and live a life of simplicity and devotion. She was a strikingly beautiful young woman, but she dressed plainly and forsook all worldly ornamentation to ensure that men would ignore her. In doing so, she set an example for women of her time and foreshadowed the establishment of female religious orders in the future. During the persecutions carried out by Emperor Decius, Soteris was arrested and subjected to severe torture due to her Christian faith. Despite the horrific pain and suffering inflicted upon her, she remained steadfast and resolute. Not once did she cry out or renounce her beliefs. Eventually, she was released and returned to her prayerful and ascetic life. Unfortunately, Soteris' respite was short-lived, as the persecutions of Diocletian later swept across the land. In this new wave of hostility towards Christians, Soteris became a target once again. Refusing to sacrifice to pagan gods, she stood firm in her devotion to Christ, even in the face of death. It is said that she never wavered in her faith or her commitment to God, regardless of the ordeal she faced. Saint Ambrose of Milan, a renowned bishop and theologian, claimed that Soteris was one of his ancestors. In honor of her courage and remarkable life, he wrote about her, ensuring that her story would be preserved for future generations. Saint Soteris The Martyr died a martyr's death on the 10th of February in 304, in Rome, Italy. She was brutally beaten and beheaded for her unwavering dedication to her faith. Her remains were interred in the Catacombs of San Callisto in Rome. Even though she was not officially canonized by the Church's Congregation for the Causes of Saints, she is considered a saint, recognized for her extraordinary witness and virtue. Although there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Soteris The Martyr, her life and example inspire all Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity and persecution. Her commitment to simplicity, devotion, and refusal to compromise her beliefs continue to be an inspiration for all those who seek to follow Christ's teachings. Saint Soteris The Martyr's feast days are celebrated on the 10th and 11th of February, depending on certain calendars.
