Biography

Saint Sixtus of Rheims, also known as Sisto, Sixte, or Xystus, is recognized as the first bishop of Rheims, France. He served in this position from approximately 260 to 280 AD. Unfortunately, there is limited information available about his life and specific accomplishments. Though we lack details regarding his representations in art, it is safe to assume that he would be depicted as a bishop, as is customary for saints with an episcopal role. This representation would typically include the distinctive attire of a bishop—wearing a mitre and holding a crosier, a shepherd's crook that symbolizes his pastoral authority. Saint Sixtus of Rheims lived during a time when Christianity was still persecuted under the Roman Empire. However, he managed to establish a strong Christian community in Rheims, which was significant in those early years of spreading the faith. Saint Sixtus passed away around 280 AD, in Rheims, France, due to natural causes. His burial took place to the south of Rheims, and a church was subsequently built at the location. This church dedicated to his honor stood for an impressive 1400 years until its demolition in 1726. In 920, Archbishop Erveo transferred the relics of Saint Sixtus to the abbey basilica of Saint-Remi, ensuring the continued veneration and preservation of his sacred remains. This action confirms the reverence and esteem in which he was held by the people of Rheims. Although Saint Sixtus of Rheims has not been officially named a patron saint, his role as the first bishop of Rheims makes him an important figure for Catholics in that region. As a bishop, he would inspire and guide other bishops who served in the centuries following his time, leaving a lasting legacy within the Church. While our knowledge of Saint Sixtus of Rheims may be somewhat limited, his dedication to spreading the Christian faith and establishing a strong Christian community in Rheims cannot be overlooked. His life and example continue to inspire us to live out our faith faithfully and courageously. As we commemorate his feast day on September 1st each year, let us honor Saint Sixtus of Rheims and seek his intercession as we strive to deepen our relationship with God and build up the Church.
