Feast Day: March 1
Death: March 1, 477
Saint Simplicius of Bourges, also known as Simplicius of Clermont, was a married layman and the father of a large family. His wife belonged to the esteemed Roman senatorial Paladii family. Simplicius was widely recognized for his personal holiness, which led to the local bishops, under the leadership of Sidonius Apollinaris of Clermont, selecting him as the bishop of Bourges, France, around the year 470. As bishop, Saint Simplicius faced numerous challenges in defending the Church against the Arian Visigoths and countering attempts made by lay officials to weaken the Church's influence. These confrontations were particularly intense and widespread in the region at the time of his election. However, Simplicius, with his steadfast commitment to orthodox Christianity, succeeded in bringing people back to the true faith and played a pivotal role in the eventual exile of Arian leaders by civil authorities. While his leadership brought about a resurgence of orthodox Christianity in the area, it also attracted the attention and ire of the Aryan faction. Consequently, Saint Simplicius was eventually captured, imprisoned, and ultimately martyred by the Arians. He endured persecution and suffered the painful fate of martyrdom, sealing his unwavering dedication to his faith and commitment to defending the Church until his last breath. Saint Simplicius of Bourges is venerated as a martyr and a model of faith and steadfastness. Although there is not much information available regarding his specific representations or patronages, his memory is celebrated on March 1st as his feast day. On some calendars, his feast day is also observed on June 16th. Although Saint Simplicius of Bourges lived in an era before the formal canonization process was established, his exemplary life and martyr's death were acknowledged by the faithful and his recognition as a saint predates the modern system of Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Today, he is remembered as a courageous and devoted defender of the Church, an inspiration to all believers who seek to remain faithful amidst adversity.
